How it works

How the benchmark works

You answer a short survey about your company, a person checks your answers, and you get a report showing where you stand against similar companies. It takes about ten minutes.

What do I have to do?

Three things, in this order.

  1. 1

    Create your account

Enter your work email and we send you a link. No application, no waiting.

  2. 2

    Answer a short survey

About 10 minutes, once per survey. Every question explains exactly what to count, so your numbers can be compared with everyone else's.

  3. 3

We check it, then you get the results

A person looks at every submission, usually within two working days. Genuine answers unlock that survey's results: the typical range, and where your company sits in it.

How does a survey round work?

Each survey covers one topic and runs in rounds: a round opens, collects answers until its closing date, and is then published. Every round follows the same three rules.

  • The questions are frozen when a round opens. Nothing is reworded while answers are coming in, so every company answers exactly the same thing.
  • One set of answers per company. A company is identified by its work email domain and answers each round once.
  • Answers can be changed until the round closes. After that they are fixed, so published results do not shift under people who have already read them.

Why does it need my work email?

Because your email domain is how we know which company you are with. Everyone who signs up with the same domain belongs to the same company, and each company answers a round once. Personal addresses (Gmail, Outlook and the like) cannot be linked to a company, so they are not accepted.

The first time you sign in you describe your company with five multiple-choice answers: country, revenue band, headcount, engineering headcount and funding. These decide which companies you are compared with.

How are my answers checked?

By a person, one submission at a time, usually within two working days. Until a submission is accepted it is in no result and unlocks no result.

  • The reviewer checks that the company is real and that the answers are genuine: not all zeros, not placeholder numbers, not typed in at random.
  • Answers are not removed for being surprising. Unusual but genuine figures stay in; removing them would bend the results towards what was already expected.
  • A submission that is not genuine is deleted, and the company is told.

Can I change my answers?

Yes, until the round closes. You can save a draft and come back, and you can reopen answers you have already sent in; they are then checked again. Once the round closes they are fixed.

Only the person who filled in the answers can see or change them. Colleagues at the same company can see that it was done, never what was entered.

When do I get the results?

When two things are true: your answers have been accepted, and the round has closed and been published. We email you when the results are ready.

  • An accepted submission unlocks that survey's results for your whole company, including earlier rounds of the same survey.
  • A round can only show results once at least 8 companies have been accepted. Early on, a survey may show “not enough data yet”.
  • The same rule applies to every filter: narrow a result to fewer than 8 companies and it is hidden. Why that is.

What does the report show?

For every question: the midpoint, the range the middle half of companies sit in, and your own figure marked on it. See a sample report, or read how the figures are calculated.
